MiamiTV needed to move its broadcast operation into the streaming era without sacrificing the reliability its audience expected from live television. The platform had to handle simultaneous live channels, on-demand archives, and a fragmented device landscape — all under the unforgiving pressure of real-time media delivery. The result was a full-stack streaming platform built from the ground up: a React web app, a cross-platform React Native mobile client, and a cloud-native ingest and delivery pipeline capable of sustaining thousands of concurrent viewers without a dropped frame.

Overview

MiamiTV is a regional broadcaster serving South Florida with live news, entertainment, and cultural programming. As cord-cutting accelerated, the station faced a hard deadline: launch a credible streaming product or cede its digital audience entirely to larger national platforms.

The engagement covered everything from architecture design to production deployment — a single, cohesive streaming ecosystem replacing a patchwork of third-party embeds and outdated workflows. The platform launched on schedule and immediately became the station's primary digital touchpoint.

The Problem

MiamiTV's existing digital presence was stitched together from off-the-shelf embeds that broke under load, offered no mobile experience, and gave the station zero control over the viewer relationship. Key pain points included:

  • Buffering and dropout during peak news events when concurrent viewers spiked
  • No native mobile app — iOS and Android audiences were completely unserved
  • No VOD archive — broadcast content vanished after airing
  • Zero analytics on viewer behavior, retention, or geographic reach

Every failure was public, happening live, in front of the audience the station most needed to retain.

The Solution

The architecture centered on AWS MediaLive for live channel encoding, feeding adaptive HLS streams through CloudFront's edge network to minimize last-mile latency across South Florida and the diaspora audience abroad. Redis handled session state and viewer concurrency tracking in real time.

A custom CMS gave producers control over scheduling, metadata, and VOD publishing without touching code. The React web player and React Native mobile apps shared a unified playback engine, ensuring consistent behavior across every surface. Redundant ingest endpoints meant a single encoder failure would never take the stream offline.

My Role

As lead engineer and architect, I owned the full delivery — from initial infrastructure design through App Store submission. Responsibilities spanned:

  • Designing the AWS MediaLive and CloudFront ingest-to-edge pipeline
  • Building the React web application and its adaptive HLS player integration
  • Developing the React Native mobile apps for iOS and Android
  • Architecting the Node.js API layer and PostgreSQL content database
  • Implementing real-time viewer analytics and a producer-facing CMS dashboard

I worked directly with MiamiTV's broadcast engineers to map existing SDI workflows into the new cloud ingest chain with no disruption to on-air operations.

  • Adaptive bitrate streaming via HLS — automatically adjusts quality to viewer bandwidth, eliminating buffering on mobile connections
  • Multi-channel live grid — viewers switch between live feeds instantly with sub-two-second channel change latency
  • Automatic VOD archiving — every broadcast is clipped, tagged, and published to the on-demand library within minutes of airing
  • Push notifications for breaking news alerts, driving measurable spikes in same-session tune-in
  • Real-time dashboard showing concurrent viewers, geographic heatmaps, and per-show retention curves

Results & Impact

Within 60 days of launch, MiamiTV's streaming platform was delivering over 8,000 concurrent viewers during peak news coverage — a load the previous setup would have collapsed under entirely. Mobile now accounts for 61% of total viewing time, a surface that simply didn't exist before the engagement.

The VOD archive accumulated 400+ hours of indexed content in its first quarter, creating a long-tail discovery channel the station had never had. Stream uptime held at 99.96% across the first six months, including two major breaking-news events that drove sudden 4× traffic spikes. MiamiTV now owns its viewer data, its delivery infrastructure, and its audience relationship outright.
